The Bulldog Story
It is believed that in 1987 Judge Memorial Catholic, The Waterford School, and Highland HS were the only 3 schools to have boys lacrosse clubs in their respective high schools. It would take 2 years before one of those teams was recognized with a picture in their yearbook and 7 more years until the first Boys Utah State Champion was crowned.
In the fall of 1994, the Utah Lacrosse Association (ULA) was founded and conducted the inaugural season for the Utah High School Lacrosse League. The league consisted of 5 teams: Alta, Park City, Provo (Orem and Timpview), Sunnyside LC (Judge Memorial Catholic, Roland Hall, East, and Brighton), and The Waterford School. Sunnyside LC coached by Mark Ethridge (HC), Dave Allen, Brett Backman, and Scott Clarke defeated The Waterford School in a fall championship game, riding the backs of 10 Judge students, and captured the 1st recognized State Championship. 6 months later in 1995, in the spring, the league would hold a 2nd championship in the more traditional season for lacrosse. 6 teams participated: Alta, Judge, Park City, Provo (Orem and Timpview), Salt Lake North (Highland and Rolland Hall), South Sandy (Brighton, Waterford and West Jordan). The newly formed Judge team won the championship 9-7 over Alta as Judge’s Drew Searl took home the MVP for the game and the leagues MVOP for the season. In 1995, Judge Memorial Catholic also formed the first and only girls’ team in the state.
Alta and Park City are the only programs to participate in every season organized lacrosse has been played in the state of Utah. Judge Memorial Catholic formed their own stand-alone team in the Spring of 1995 with Coach Dave Allen being the first Head Coach in school history after being an Assistant Coach on the 1994 Fall State Champion Sunnyside LC team. In 1996, Judge also fielded the first JV team in the state of Utah due to the sport’s popularity in the school. Even though the Bulldog’s did not have their own team, twice, our students did find teams to play on in those years.
In the 2019-2020 school year Judge joined 28 other programs from the state of Utah in the first year of sanctioned lacrosse under the Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA). Unfortunately, the season was cut short due to COVID-19 after playing only 2 games, and the team missed out on their chance to compete for back-to-back state championships. By the start of the 2021-2022 season, the state of Utah had grown to 58 sanctioned Varsity teams, due to low enrollment numbers and the large graduating class of 2021 (13 student athletes), Judge was unable to field its own team for the first time since the initial fall season of 1994. Thankfully, East HS gave some dedicated Bulldogs a home for the season.
The 2022-2023 season saw the rebirth of Bulldog lacrosse as a strong Freshman class moved up the ranks through the now thriving-again youth program that some dedicated Judge parents took it upon themselves to rebuild. The school produced 34 enthusiastic student athletes (3 Seniors, 3 Juniors, 10 Sophomores, 18 Freshman) and fielded both a JV and Varsity team. Of the 34, only 4 had ever played in a High School lacrosse game. The young and inexperienced Varsity team made it all the way to the 4A State Semifinals after winning the 4A South Region, shocking the state but not the coaches.
In only the second year back, the 2023-2024 Judge Bulldogs not only improved on the previous year but smashed all expectations from around the state and captured another Region Title. They also accomplished the ultimate goal of “Ending the Year in a Pile” and a 4A State Championship. The 6th in school history. The program grew to an amazing 54 total student athletes and had 3 teams for the first time since 2013: Varsity, JV, and JV2
The 2024-2025 season is one of high possibilities and greater expectations as the popularity of the sport continues to explode in the halls of the school and across the state. Southern Utah will have 8 teams joining the 4A classification and your Bulldogs have the same goal as we continue to “Keep Building”, and “End The Year In A Pile, A Bulldog Pile, Again” !!!
From 1994 to 2024, in 30 seasons the Varsity program has amassed a 281-156 record (.643 winning percentage). In the 29 years of competing in the State Playoffs, Judge has 6 State Championship in 10 Finals appearances, 15 Semi-Finals appearances, and 22 Quarter-Final appearances.
Judge Memorial Catholic High School Bulldog Coaches
Dave Allen 1995 – 2014 (20 Years).
Coach Dave Allen was the first and only coach that Judge would know for the first 20 years of its existence. The only way to describe Dave Allen is “LEGEND”. Nobody on the sidelines in Utah history has coached more years, won more games, and been to more championship games. In his 20 years as a Bulldog, he had a record of 202-96, 3 State Championships (1995, 2000, 2001) in 7 appearances (Runner-up 2002, 2007, 2009, 2011). Coach Allen was inducted into the Utah Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2007. He was the US Lacrosse Coach of the Year award winner in 2001 and under his leadership, Judge produced 3 All-Americans, 1 All-Academic, 2 Assistant COY and countless All-State and All-Region players. Coach capped his career by being present with the ULA Legacy Award “for 20 years of dedication and commitment to not only the Judge Memorial lacrosse program but also to the growth of lacrosse here in Utah”.
Chuck Gosselin 2015 – 2016 (2 Years)
Coach Chuck Gosselin was the second coach in Judge history taking over after Coach Allen retired following the 2014 season. A member of Coach Allen’s staff since 2006 and the JV Head Coach, Coach Gosselin was the natural choice to lead the Bulldogs. In 2 seasons he accumulated a 25-10 record and took his teams to the Class A playoffs twice including a State Quarter-Finals game in 2015.
Dan Duggan 2017 (1 Year)
Coach Dan Duggan stepped up to the plate for the 2016/2017 school year after Coach Gosselin stepped away and the program could not find a permanent, committed, Head Coach that fit the Judge tradition. Coach Duggan had been with the Judge program since 2009 and was the FS Head Coach, and an Assistant Coach for JV and Varsity. Coach Duggan also found a way to Coach the 7/8 grade youth team through the years. After filling in for the year and taking Judge to the Class B playoffs, he stayed with the program as the Head JV Coach, Varsity Assistant Coach, and 7/8 youth Head Coach until 2019 when he was elected to serve in local government. Coach Duggan was honored in 2017 as the UHSLL Person of the Year as part of the High School Sanctioning Committee. Coach Duggan not only helped to establish lacrosse in St. George but is the only 3-time Utah Youth (ULA and IMLax) President and continues to lead the “Grow the Player, Grow the League, Grow the Game” mission of IMLax.
Braeden Daly 2018 – 2021 (4 Years)
Coach Braeden Daly took over from Coach Duggan for the 2018/2019 school year. Coach Daly had the difficult task of keeping his program together during the COVID season of 2019/2020 after playing only 2 games and into the 2020/2021 season. Coached Daly planned to coach the 2021/2022 season but due to low numbers after graduating 13 seniors the program was forced to take a year off. In 4 years at the helm Coach Daly amassed a 26-27 record that included a Class C State Championship in 2019 and a Class B Quarter-Finals appearance in 2018.
Jeff Brzoska 2023 – Present (2 Years)
Coach Jeff Brzoska enters his third season as the Judge Head Coach and 16th year of coaching lacrosse in Utah. Coach Brzoska spent his first 10 years in the Park City youth and high school programs. Coach Brzoska was part of 3 Park City State Championship teams (2014, 2018, 2019) in 4 appearances (Runner-up 2015). After leaving Park City he moved on to Corner Canyon HS for 3 years where he was the JV Head Coach and Varsity Assistant. In 3 years, his JV teams went 35-1-2 and the Varsity teams went 51-1 capturing State Championships in 2021 and 2022.
In Coach Brzoska’s 2 seasons at Judge, a rebuilding year, and a keep building year, the program has grown from 2 to 3 teams and the Varsity team went from 9-8 and a Semifinals loss to 17-3 and a 4A State Championship and the first USA Lacrosse All-Academic recipient since 2012. He has also won 2 Region Coach of the Year and the 2024 USA Lacrosse Coach of the Year awards.
